Pros

The Ecosmart ECO 18 Electric Tankless Water Heater is cheaper than some of the whole house electric tankless water heater out in the market. It is 30-40% cheaper compared to other electric water heaters of almost the same size and capacity.

It is visually pleasing, despite having a simplistic design, and it has a relatively compact size which will help you save on storage space. The temperature dial allows the water temperature to be easily set to the desired temperature, and there is no need for mixing cold water.

The thing that often bothers people who buy electric tankless water heaters that are configured for the whole house is the difficulty in installing them.

The Ecosmart ECO 18 Electric Tankless Water Heater, however, is relatively easy to install. It is wall mounted, and the plumbing involved in installing this electric water heater is rather straightforward, and the electrical aspect of the installation is also not that difficult for the average do-it-yourself Joe, who has some basic plumbing and soldering skills and tools.

When it comes to performance, the Ecosmart ECO 18 Electric Tankless Water Heater can provide hot water at a rate of over 2.5 gallons per minute. That is the equivalent to one shower head and one sink. The Ecosmart ECO 18 is also capable of simultaneouslyaccommodating two sinks and two showers, depending on the temperature of the water coming in.

With that being said, it seems that this electric tankless water heater delivers on its name as a whole-house electric water heater.

With that performance, the Ecosmart ECO 18 can easily heat water around the clock for average-sized homes, two-bedroom apartments, restaurants, or any house that needs hot water in both kitchen and bathrooms. With this electric water heater, any homeowner can use the dishwasher and the showers at the same time and still have hot water in the process.

This unit was even praised for being able to provide hot water for two showers whether it be summer or winter.

Cons

Some say that the Ecosmart ECO 18 Electric Tankless Water Heater was good, but it was not extraordinary. How you take this is up to you.  Much of the negatives that people have come to experience with the Ecosmart ECO 18 Electric Tankless Water Heater have to do with alleged manufacturing defects.

Some were quite disappointed after the supposedly durable Ecosmart ECO 18 broke down in less than a year; some units broke down after 8 months, some after 11. There has also been an issue regarding the internal copper piping that corroded two-and-a-half years after installation.

When it comes to performance, the Ecosmart ECO 18 Electric Tankless Water Heater has been criticized of not providing the amount of hot water as expected from a whole-house water heater. Then again, this can be influenced by the temperature of the water coming in from the water supply, and by the distance of the heater to the sink or shower being used.

There was also an issue about the Ecosmart ECO 18 creating some pockets of steam in the piping. The steam was supposedly caused by the water heater heating the water after the faucet has been turned off. That, in turn, creates a hazard in the form of your hand being accidentally burnt by the first gush of water coming out of the faucet or even the shower head.

Another thing is the installation cost. Although some say that the installation of the Ecosmart ECO 18 Electric Tankless Water Heater is relatively easy, others still need professional installation, which costs the owner fees paid for the plumbing and electric wiring installations.

And just like any other whole-house electric tankless water heater, you should check if your existing wiring at home can support or will work with the Ecosmart ECO 18 Electric Tankless Water Heater.

Verdict

The Ecosmart ECO 18 has promised energy efficiency, performance, and durability. It has delivered on that promise as far as some people are concerned, but not others.

A lot of external factors affect the performance of the Ecosmart ECO 18, just like any other whole-house electric tankless water heater, but the internal factors such as factory defects, pockets of steam, and breaking down within a year really took the Ecosmart ECO 18 down the ladder of reliable whole-house electric tankless water heaters.

All in all, it is a 6 out of 10.
